VPNs, proxies, Tor and iCloud Private Relay solve different privacy problems. This 2026 guide explains what each protects and where its limits are.

VPNs, proxies, Tor and iCloud Private Relay are often grouped together because all can change how your traffic appears on the internet. They are not interchangeable. The useful question is: which traffic are you trying to protect, and from whom?

What each tool does

A VPN creates an encrypted tunnel between your device and a VPN server. Websites normally see the VPN server's IP address, while your local network and ISP see an encrypted connection to the VPN provider.

A proxy usually forwards traffic for one application or protocol. Encryption is not guaranteed unless the proxy protocol itself provides it.

Tor routes traffic through multiple relays. It is designed for anonymity rather than speed and is best used through Tor Browser.

iCloud Private Relay is an Apple privacy feature for supported Safari traffic. It is not a full-device VPN and does not replace a VPN for every app.

What changed by 2026?

Modern operating systems increasingly include private DNS, relay and encrypted transport features. That is useful, but it also makes it easier to assume that every privacy feature protects the same layer. It does not.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose a VPN for broad device or app traffic protection on untrusted networks.
  • Use a proxy when you only need application-level routing and understand its encryption model.
  • Use Tor when anonymity is more important than speed and convenience.
  • Use Private Relay as an Apple privacy enhancement for supported traffic, not as a universal VPN replacement.

Practical checklist

Check whether the tool covers all apps, whether DNS is protected, whether IPv6 is handled correctly and whether the provider can see account-linked activity. No single tool removes the need for secure accounts, HTTPS, passkeys or MFA.

Bottom line

These technologies overlap, but their trust models and coverage differ. Pick the one that matches your threat model instead of assuming that a changed IP address means complete privacy.
