A VPN for gaming — when does it make sense, and when not?
Sensible scenarios
- If you've been hit by a DDoS attack: A rival player got hold of your IP — a VPN gives you a new one, and the attack goes to the VPN server instead.
- ISP throttling: Some ISPs slow down gaming traffic. A VPN can bypass this behavior.
- Region-locked game access: China-exclusive games or region-restricted servers.
- Early access: New games launch earlier in some regions.
- Playing on public Wi-Fi: In a dorm, café or hotel — the DDoS risk increases.
Pointless or harmful scenarios
- For lower ping: A VPN adds an extra hop — it almost always raises ping. The rare exception is when your ISP's routing is very bad.
- For cheating: A VPN doesn't hide cheats like aim bots or wallhacks. If the game publisher detects it, your account gets banned.
- In ranked/tournament matches: Publishers like Riot Games suspend accounts if they detect a region switch.
Ping impact — average VPN performance
VPN ping impact when connecting from Türkiye (Istanbul) to various game servers (based on our tests, April–May 2026):
| Game server | Ping without VPN | NordVPN | ExpressVPN | Surfshark |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Frankfurt (EU) | 45ms | 52ms | 54ms | 58ms |
| London (EU West) | 62ms | 68ms | 71ms | 75ms |
| New York (NA East) | 115ms | 124ms | 122ms | 132ms |
| Tokyo (Asia) | 230ms | 245ms | 242ms | 258ms |
Bottom line: In our tests we observed a 10–15% ping increase on nearby servers and 5–8% on distant ones. NordVPN and ExpressVPN were among the lowest-impact options in this category. Results reflect our observations on the test dates; they may differ under your own network conditions.
DDoS protection — the real level of protection
VPN DDoS protection works in two layers:
- IP masking: The attacker can't see your real IP, only the VPN server's.
- VPN provider infrastructure: The server infrastructure of major providers (NordVPN, ExpressVPN) includes a DDoS protection layer.
For hardcore esports players a VPN alone isn't enough — Cloudflare Spectrum or similar enterprise-grade protection may also be needed. For casual streaming and ranked games, a VPN is sufficient.
Region hopping — risks and limitations
Riot Games (Valorant, LoL): Aggressive region-detection system. High risk of account suspension. Use a server in your own region, purely for DDoS protection.
Steam: Regional price differences have shrunk a lot compared to 2022. Switching regions is grounds for account suspension.
PlayStation/Xbox Store: If a region switch is detected, the account can be suspended; payment methods don't work across regions.
General advice: Instead of region hopping, use the VPN for DDoS protection and better network quality within your own region.
Console setup — the router method
There's no native VPN app on PlayStation, Xbox or Switch. The solution:
- Install it on the router: Routers like ASUS, GL.iNet and OPNsense support VPN clients.
- Share from a PC: Turn the VPN on on your PC → share it with the console via mobile hotspot or ethernet sharing.
- Smart DNS: With NordVPN's SmartDNS feature you can change the DNS on the console to get around some restrictions (no DDoS protection).
Frequently asked questions
Does a VPN lower or raise ping in games?
It usually raises it — because of the extra hop. But in some scenarios it lowers it: a VPN can offer a shortcut route to a game server where your ISP has slow peering. ExpressVPN and NordVPN deliver the best results here; test your own connection during the trial period.
Is using a VPN against the rules? Will I get banned?
Most game publishers' terms of service prohibit 'playing from a different region', but VPN detection is weak. Riot Games (Valorant, LoL) enforces this most aggressively — if you're caught using a VPN to switch regions, there's a ban risk. If you only use it for DDoS protection, the risk is minimal.
How does a VPN protect against DDoS attacks?
The attacker can't see your real IP — they see the VPN server's IP. The DDoS attack hits the VPN server, not you. In ranked matches (CS2, Valorant, Fortnite tournaments) you stay protected with constantly refreshed IPs.
Which VPN works on PlayStation/Xbox?
Consoles don't support VPN apps. The solution: install the VPN on your router (ExpressVPN, NordVPN and Surfshark provide router guides). Or turn the VPN on on a PC and share the internet connection.
Are server prices cheaper in Türkiye?
For some games, yes — Steam regional pricing used to be lower in Türkiye, but after 2022 it became largely dollarized. Some games are still cheaper on the PlayStation Store and Xbox Store, but switching regions with a VPN can get the account suspended.
