Chromebook VPN Setup Guide 2026
How to set up VPN on Chrome OS: Play Store app, L2TP/OpenVPN profile, and router methods.
Chromebook VPN setup differs from Windows or macOS. Three main paths: Play Store app, built-in VPN profile, and router VPN.
Play Store App (Recommended)
On Android-enabled Chromebooks:
- Open Google Play Store
- Install your VPN provider's app
- Sign in, pick server, connect
- Enable kill switch and auto-connect
Older Chromebooks without Play Store need other methods.
Built-in VPN Profile
Settings → Network → VPN → Add:
- L2TP/IPsec — enterprise or legacy providers
- OpenVPN — if provider supplies
.ovpn(Chrome OS version dependent)
School-managed devices may enforce policy VPN.
Router or Hotspot
Without Play Store:
- Home router VPN
- Phone VPN + hotspot to Chromebook (temporary)
Streaming and School Networks
School networks may block VPN. Try obfuscated servers — high-restriction guide. For streaming see VPN streaming guide and best VPN.
Security Tips
- VPN first on public Wi-Fi — public Wi-Fi VPN
- Run DNS leak test
- Trustworthy VPN
