Chromebook VPN setup differs from Windows or macOS. Three main paths: Play Store app, built-in VPN profile, and router VPN.

Play Store App (Recommended)

On Android-enabled Chromebooks:

  1. Open Google Play Store
  2. Install your VPN provider's app
  3. Sign in, pick server, connect
  4. Enable kill switch and auto-connect

Older Chromebooks without Play Store need other methods.

Built-in VPN Profile

Settings → Network → VPN → Add:

  • L2TP/IPsec — enterprise or legacy providers
  • OpenVPN — if provider supplies .ovpn (Chrome OS version dependent)

School-managed devices may enforce policy VPN.

Router or Hotspot

Without Play Store:

  • Home router VPN
  • Phone VPN + hotspot to Chromebook (temporary)

Streaming and School Networks

School networks may block VPN. Try obfuscated servers — high-restriction guide. For streaming see VPN streaming guide and best VPN.

Summary

Chromebook VPN: Play Store app first; profile or router as backup. Prefer providers tested in our methodology.
