Coworking spaces and conferences often provide fast internet, but the network is shared with people and devices you do not control. That makes them a good example of where a VPN is useful but not sufficient.

Before you connect

Confirm the official SSID, disable automatic joining and update your device. If a captive portal asks for unusual permissions or software installation, verify it with the venue.

Connect the VPN early

Start the VPN before opening corporate dashboards, source-code repositories or cloud consoles. If your company provides a managed VPN or Zero Trust client, follow that policy instead of adding an unmanaged consumer tunnel on top.

Protect the account layer

Use passkeys or MFA for email, GitHub, cloud providers and password managers. A VPN cannot protect an account if a session token is stolen or a phishing page captures credentials.

Reduce exposure

Turn off local file sharing and network discovery. Avoid exposing development services to the local subnet. Use HTTPS and SSH keys for administrative access.

Quick checklist

  • Official SSID confirmed
  • VPN or corporate access client connected
  • MFA/passkeys enabled
  • File sharing disabled
  • Device firewall active
  • Sensitive work avoided on unknown captive portals

Bottom line

Coworking and event Wi-Fi can be used safely when network protection, account security and device hardening are treated as separate layers.
