Traditional remote-access VPNs connect a device to a private network. Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA) systems more often grant access to specific applications after checking identity, device state and policy.

Traditional VPN strengths

A VPN is straightforward when users need broad access to internal services, legacy applications or private subnets. It can also protect traffic on untrusted networks.

Zero Trust strengths

ZTNA can reduce lateral movement by avoiding broad network access. Policies may consider user identity, device compliance, location and risk signals before granting access to a specific application.

They can coexist

Many organizations use both. A managed VPN may remain necessary for infrastructure administration while browser-based business apps move behind identity-aware access controls.

What employees should do

Do not stack a personal VPN on top of a corporate access client unless policy allows it. Extra tunnels can break routing, DNS and device-compliance checks.

2026 remote-work checklist

  • Use the company-provided access method.
  • Keep the endpoint management agent active.
  • Use MFA or passkeys.
  • Avoid exposing local development services.
  • Report repeated certificate or login prompts.
  • Separate personal and work browser profiles where required.

Bottom line

VPN and Zero Trust are not mutually exclusive. The right architecture limits access to what the user actually needs while keeping identity, device and network controls visible to the security team.
