The VPN world is confusing: hundreds of providers, contradicting reviews, aggressive marketing. VPN Advisor started as a personal response to that mess — a volunteer review project.
What is this? VPN Advisor is not a company or institution; it has no registered legal entity. It is a public version of the notes that built up while we were comparing VPN providers for our own use. Google AdSense ad revenue covers infrastructure costs; it does not influence the recommendations. See Advertising disclosure and Legal notice for details.
Our approach
We try to make it easier to find clear, independent, methodology-driven information when choosing a VPN. Our assessments come from independent audit reports, public sources and our own test observations — not marketing copy. No recommendation is a hard guarantee; the final decision is always yours.
Our three core principles
Transparent methodology
Every VPN is scored against the same six criteria. The criteria and their weights are public.
Editorial independence
Ad revenue does not influence the ranking or the assessment. We list all providers against the same criteria.
Evidence first
Saying "good VPN" isn't enough — independent audits, court rulings or audit reports are required.
How do we test?
Every VPN on the site is evaluated against the same six objective criteria: privacy policy and jurisdiction, independent audits, speed, streaming compatibility, pricing transparency and ease of use. See our methodology page for the details.
Our revenue model
We finance this site through Google AdSense ad revenue. Pages show ads served by Google; links to VPN providers are plain, non-commercial links and we earn no commission from them. We explain this in detail on the Advertising disclosure page.
Important: Ad revenue does not influence the ranking. We rank all providers (including e.g. Mullvad) against the same criteria; a brand running ads does not get placed at the top.
Who writes this?
VPN Advisor started as a personal project. Content is produced through volunteer contributions; there is no professional newsroom or editorial staff. The primary sources are providers' own audit reports, publicly available court documents, open-source repositories and our own observations. If you find anything wrong or missing, please let us know — we take corrections seriously.
Why does this site exist?
Commercial VPN reviews are mostly sales-driven; "best" claims get repeated without sources. VPN Advisor is a reference project that started as a hobby and grew more systematic over time, written into that gap. The goal is not to give a single "correct answer" — it's to provide structured information so the reader can make their own call.
