ChatGPT Plus costs $20 per month in the United States. Outside the US, the amount you actually pay can be higher or lower, because OpenAI bills some countries in local currency, local taxes are added, and app-store prices follow each store's own price tiers.
That price gap has made "use a VPN to pay the cheapest country's price" a popular idea. This guide explains what the official plans cost in 2026, why prices differ, which savings are legitimate, and why a VPN-based workaround is a poor trade for most people.
Short answer: In 2026 the cheapest legitimate way to cut the cost is often not a VPN at all, but ChatGPT Go, a lower-priced plan that OpenAI now offers worldwide. Using a VPN and a foreign payment method to imitate another country can breach OpenAI's terms and put your account and payment at risk.
ChatGPT plans and official prices in 2026
OpenAI lists these consumer plans:
| Plan | Official US price | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Occasional use with limits |
| Go | $8 per month | Regular use of the main model, more messages and uploads than Free |
| Plus | $20 per month | Heavier use and access to more advanced features |
| Pro | from $100 per month | Professional, very high-volume use |
ChatGPT Go was introduced in India in August 2025 and, according to OpenAI's Go announcement, started rolling out everywhere ChatGPT is available on January 16, 2026. OpenAI also says Go pricing is localized in some markets: for example, ₹399 per month in India, including GST.
Plans, limits and prices change often. Always confirm the current price on the official pricing page or in your own account before you subscribe.
Why the price of ChatGPT Plus differs by country
Several separate factors change the final amount:
- Taxes. The US price is shown without sales tax or VAT. In countries that charge VAT or a digital services tax, that tax is added at checkout, or shown in the price, depending on local consumer rules.
- Local currency billing. OpenAI's multi-currency billing guidance explains that some countries are billed in local currency. Converted local prices do not always match the US dollar price exactly.
- App stores. If you subscribe through the Apple App Store or Google Play, the store sets the local price tier for your store country and handles billing and refunds.
- Exchange rates and card fees. If your card is charged in a foreign currency, your bank may add a conversion fee on top.
The result is that one person can pay noticeably more or less than $20 for the same Plus plan. That is a difference in billing country, not a different product.
Does a VPN make ChatGPT Plus cheaper?
Not in a reliable or safe way. A VPN changes the IP address that a website sees. Subscription pricing, however, is normally tied to your billing country, payment method and, for in-app purchases, your app-store country. Changing only your IP address usually does not change the price you pay.
To get another country's price, people typically have to go further: create an account while pretending to be in that country and pay with a card or wallet from that country. That is where the real risks begin:
- Terms of use. OpenAI's terms of use require you to provide accurate and complete information when you register, and prohibit circumventing restrictions or protective measures. Misrepresenting your country to obtain a regional price can breach those terms.
- Account restrictions. Inconsistent signals, such as a billing country, card country and everyday login location that do not match, can trigger extra verification, payment failures or account restrictions.
- Losing your history. If an account is restricted, you can lose access to saved chats, custom GPTs and projects, not just the subscription.
- Refunds. A subscription cancelled for a policy breach may not be refunded, and app-store purchases follow the store's own refund rules.
- Third-party payment cards. Foreign virtual cards or resold "regional accounts" add fees, fraud risk and the possibility that someone else controls your account.
For a saving of a few dollars per month, that is a poor trade for most people, especially if ChatGPT holds your work or personal data.

Legitimate ways to pay less for ChatGPT
- Start with Go. If you mainly need more messages and uploads with the main model, ChatGPT Go at $8 in the US, and less in some local markets, may cover your needs at less than half the price of Plus.
- Compare web and app-store prices in your own country. The same plan can cost a different amount through the website, Apple or Google. Check all three in your real billing country.
- Use the Free plan for light use. If you only use ChatGPT a few times a week, test whether the free limits are enough before paying.
- Businesses: use the right plan and tax ID. In countries with VAT, registered businesses can often enter a tax ID at checkout so VAT is handled correctly. Team-style business plans add admin and data controls.
- Watch for official student or regional offers. OpenAI has run time-limited offers in some markets. Only trust offers shown on OpenAI's own website or in your account.
- Cancel unused months. Turning off auto-renewal when a project ends often saves more than any regional price difference.
Where a VPN does help with ChatGPT
A VPN is still useful around AI tools, just not as a discount tool. It can protect your traffic on public Wi-Fi in hotels, airports and cafés, and hide which services you use from the local network operator. It does not hide what you type into ChatGPT from OpenAI. Our AI tools privacy guide explains which data the AI provider still sees.
If ChatGPT is not available where you are, check OpenAI's supported countries list first. Using a service from an unsupported location can also conflict with its terms.
Watch out for fake ChatGPT Plus billing emails
Criminals use ChatGPT's popularity as bait. Microsoft reported a ChatGPT-themed phishing campaign in 2026 that sent up to 100,000 emails in one day, asking people to "update" their Plus payment details to steal card data. Never update billing from an email link. Open ChatGPT yourself and check the billing page in your account. Our October 2026 cyberattack briefing covers this campaign and other AI-themed scams.
Frequently asked questions
How much is ChatGPT Plus in 2026?
ChatGPT Plus costs $20 per month in the US, before any sales tax. In other countries the final price depends on local currency billing, VAT or other taxes, and whether you pay through the website or an app store.
Which country has the cheapest ChatGPT Plus?
Prices shown on third-party comparison sites change often and are usually based on app-store listings or currency conversions. The only price that applies to you is the one shown for your real billing country. In many cases, ChatGPT Go is a bigger saving than any country difference for Plus.
Can I use a VPN to get cheaper ChatGPT Plus?
A VPN alone usually does not change the price, because billing depends on your billing country and payment method. Pretending to be in another country to get a lower price can breach OpenAI's terms and lead to payment problems or account restrictions.
Is ChatGPT Go worth it instead of Plus?
If you mainly use the main model for writing, questions and file uploads, Go may be enough. If you rely on the most advanced models, higher limits or features reserved for Plus, compare the plan details on OpenAI's pricing page before you switch.
